What is Purim?

By Katy Gilroy March 6, 2025

I confess, I have heard of Purim, the Jewish Holiday celebrated in late winter/early spring, and I know children spend time planning their costumes, but I never knew why.  So as Sundown March 13 marks the start of the 2025 Celebration of Purim, here’s what I’ve learned.

Purim is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the deliverance of the Jewish people from a massacre in ancient Persia. It's a lively holiday that takes place in the Hebrew month of Adar, usually in February or March.

How is Purim celebrated? Feasting and drinking wine, dressing up in costumes, giving gifts to family and friends, and participating in Purim spiels that re-enact the story.

What's the story behind Purim?

  • Haman, the King's advisor, plotted to kill all the Jews
  • Queen Esther, who was Jewish but the King didn't know, revealed Haman's plot to the King
  • Esther's uncle refused to bow down to Haman
  • Haman's plans were foiled, and the Jewish people were saved

Why is Purim called Purim?

  • The Hebrew word Purim means "lots"
  • Haman cast lots to determine the day he would kill the Jews

Why do people dress up for Purim?

  • To replicate Esther's idea of hiding her Jewish identity
  • To represent the miracles disguised as natural events in the story
  • To cheer when Esther appears

So, a Happy Purim to all who celebrate.
