A Winter Library Quest

By Katy Gilroy February 6, 2025

I have to confess, I am book-loving, story-reading, bookstores are my happy place kind of gal.  But I also love libraries! The comfy chairs, the smell, the peace, and  especially these days-when my kids join in the fun!  Gone are days of “quiet whispering” and “serious research”. in their place is exciting family-fun! Crafts, scavenger hunts, computer terminals, and adventure!

Don’t believe me?  Check out my events page as it's crammed full of events and activities, and almost all are free or low-cost!!!

This winter the Nassau Library System is offering a challenge: visit libraries and earn prizes:  https://quest.nassaulibrary.org Similar to what they’ve done in summers previous.  In 2023 my family participated in that challenge, It was So! Much. Fun!  And visiting 10 libraries will earn you a library quest magnet or vinyl sticker, and be entered into a grand prize raffle from the Nassau Library System! Just visit your first library to pick up the library map and get a stamp at each library you visit!

I put the kids in charge of finding additional activities to do in each area, and I took care of travel!  They had an awesome time finding additional things to fill our days and new restaurants to eat at and I had a great time challenging their sense of normalcy: sometimes we drove, other times we took the Long Island Rail Road and one time we took a bus, an adventure they still talk about!

My kids still ask to visit the “Hogwart's library”, a Nassau library that made the most of their summer reading program by suspending electric candles from the ceiling and making cozy "reading nests” for kiddos to enjoy. Just like the Hogwarts of their dreams!

Did you know, in just our little area you can visit 6 separate library branches? Floral Park Public Library, Great Neck Main Branch, Great Neck Lakeville Branch, Great Neck Parkville Branch, Great Neck Station Branch, and Hillside Public Library!

Want a chance to experience that with your kiddos? Join the Library Quest 2025 and see what adventure your family has!  Sounds like a great way to find something to do February Break 2025, and so I’m planning 2 days of library meetups! Each date will include 2 libraries and a break in between each for a great meal (own expense).Tuesday February 18 will be 3 pm to 5 pm at the library, and dinner 5 pm to 6 pm and another library 6 pm to 8 pm.  Thursday February 20 will be 10 am to 12 pm, lunch break 12 pm to 1 pm and another library 1 pm to 3 pm.

Join us for a whole day, a half day, whatever works for your schedule! Each meal spot will be kid-friendly and local to the libraries we’re visiting!

Let me know if you’re joining us here: https://forms.gle/LrxDjopvw5NbnoZR9

Once I receive your RSVP I will send out the itinerary.

As a bonus, each Macaroni Kids subscriber family that participates and completes at least 10 libraries by 3/2/2025 will be entered in a raffle for a fantastic Macaroni Kid prize pack from local merchants and me!  Each day you visit libraries with me gets you 3 extra entries! Tell me which you visited and upload your proof of library visits here (photo of library map): https://forms.gle/DL5hy6fEFG6C7uv49
