We have an interesting take on New Year’s at our house. With four kids from pre-school to high school, there is a lot of excitement about the big ball drop and New Year’s Eve festivities. However, our littles have never stayed up until midnight, and our biggies love to stay up. So what’s our solution? Two celebrations, one at noon and one at midnight! Each pair of kids gets their own special noon/New Year.
My littles enjoy a fancy Noon Year party, so this year we’re serving our special meal on our good china. The table will be set, LED candlesticks lit, and decorations hung from the chandelier. I haven’t decided what I’m serving yet, but knowing my kids they’ll ask for an easy but special meal. Dino nuggets, mashed potatoes, gravy, and little broccoli trees are high on the list of favorites! We’ll count down from 11:59 am and 45 seconds and the moment the clock hits Noon there will be shouting and New Year’s horns and hugs and chaos! I also snagged some confetti poppers in an after-Christmas sale!
My biggies on the other hand will start their party after littles bedtime. Appetizers and party food are set out, along with fancy mocktails. In past years it’s been a mish-mosh of video calls with friends and family, board games with us, and watching the various New Year’s Eve shows. As tends to happen my husband and I drift off to sleep on the couch leaving the teen and tween to wake us up at 11:59 to watch the ball drop.
It’s cozy, it’s fun and Noon and New Year’s are spent together. I can’t think of a more perfect way to start 2025.
